Introduction

Never both. is a short browser horror piece by jonathan-snow, created for Game Off 2026 around the theme SHIFT. You never steer: the figure walks the hallway on its own, and the only decision is whether the light is on. Holding Shift, or holding the screen, switches it on. While the light is lit, the shaft of window-light on the floor becomes solid, so the walk stops at its edge; let go and the figure passes through, but whatever is behind you gains ground in the dark and refuses to come closer while the light is on. Beyond the final patch of light waits a door that will not open in darkness. A run takes roughly ten seconds once the rule is understood. There is no audio and no art assets, since everything is drawn in code. One mechanic, one hallway, two states, and you can only ever occupy one of them.
